30 Days of Christmas Shopping: Day 20, iCade

It’s almost time to start praying for snow and for the shopping sweats to start and today’s gift is something a little bit retro and a little bit hipster but all round fun.

iCade

All these new touchscreen devices and advancements in technology are super awesome but part of me just wants to go back to the late 80s early 90s and enjoy the feel of a joystick and the sight of pixel art. Now you can.

The iCade is an arcade-style cabinet that features a chunky joystick and eight full-sized buttons that wirelessly integrate with your iPad’s internal jiggery pokery, allowing you to play various retro titles downloadable via the Atari Greatest Hits app.

Along with the retro Atari classics, a whole host of existing and new apps can be played using the arcade style controls so you have a whole world of possibilities out there.

The iCade is available from: Firebox, John Lewis, Play, Maplins, Amazon, HMV and that’s just for starters and retails for about £80.

A couple things to bear in mind with this: it doesn’t come with a charger in the UK so can only run on batteries, you only get one Atari game pack for free so extra content will have to be purchased and lastly, you do have to build it yourself. They’re not deal breakers but I thought I’d warn you.

This would be perfect for any gamer, anyone who was alive to play Pac-Man the first time round and pretty much anybody. I would love to find this under my tree this year, can you think of anybody else who would?
